Her daughter's friend shared a screenshot of the post, revealing her mother's private lifestyle to her. This immediately raised questions with the daughter regarding her parent's earlier divorce. Something had never seemed right about the reasons they gave for their sudden split, and the daughter had always suspected that something was being concealed.
She approached her father to get more information and ask whether what the leaked post said was true. Since the cat was already out of the bag, her father told her the truth about their reasons for divorce.
The father posted this thread, u/throwaway82619237, to Reddit's r/AmItheAsshole community after his ex-wife found out about the conversation with the daughter. The couple had split due to the wife's realization that she was polyamorous and no longer wished to lead a monogamous life. At the wife's behest, they agreed that they would not reveal the reasons for their split to their family members.
Ethical non-monogamy has been rising in recent years, with more and more people turning to multi-partner relationships. Searches for the term 'polyamory' have doubled since 2009, with searches for 'open relationship' increasing even more.
The father is now in a tight spot as his ex-wife is furious with him since the children no longer want anything to do with her after learning the truth. He has turned to the community to try and figure out if he was wrong for revealing everything that remained to their children.
